We know that meteorites have hit Earth and can be dangerous.
In this year, 2013, a meteorite exploded right above Russia and made car
alarms go off, windows shatter, people afraid or saying what the heck happened?
(You would have done that too).
"[A meteorite that was about 54 feet long] exploded in the air over the
Chelyabinsk region of Russia on Feb. 15, [2013] shattering windows and injuring
around 1,000 people. But had the meteor come in at a slightly different angle,
the space rock could have impacted the ground and the fallout could have been
much worse" (Mann).
Some time ago a meteor exploded over Siberia, startling people and having
tremendous effects. This is proof that even if a meteorite doesn’t hit, it can
be destructive.
A meteorite hit Siberia in 1908 but since it was a remote area no one did the
expedition of the site until 1921."The 1921 expedition laid bare the devastation
caused by impact, with 80m of trees leveled over 830 square miles (2,150 sq.
km)" (Niland).
Some of the biggest craters (like the Arizona crater) were made the longest
ago. The Arizona exploded with the force of 2 ½ million tons of TNT
(KABOOM!!!).
"Fifty thousand years ago, a giant fireball streaked across the North
American sky. It struck the earth in what is now northern Arizona, exploding
with the force of 2 ½ million tons of TNT" ("History").
Now then, imagine if a meteor like that hit Charlottesville.
